Being brave means trying, even when it feels scary. Here’s how to prepare your child for the first day of daycare or school with a pretend first day.
New places, new faces and new routines can feel big to a little one. Being brave doesn’t mean not being scared. It means trying anyway, with a grown-up nearby who believes in them.
What it means for your child
Brave looks different at each age.
- Babies: New faces and new places are big for babies. Hold them close and let them look from your arms before you hand them over.
- Toddlers: They may hide behind your legs in a new place. Give them time to watch before they join in.
- Preschoolers: They can practice being brave with pretend play: a pretend first day, a pretend doctor visit, a pretend new friend.
- School-age kids: Big kids can talk about what feels scary and make a plan. Remind them of a time they were brave before.
Try this tonight
Tonight, play “first day” at home.
- Set up a pretend classroom with a few toys, a snack and a cozy spot to rest.
- Take turns being the grown-up and the new kid, and practice saying goodbye and hello.
- End with a big hug and say, “You were so brave today.”
Words you can use
- “It’s okay to feel scared. You can still try.”
- “I believe in you.”
- “I will always come back for you.”
At Nana’s Place
Nana’s Place has two buildings in Glendale and cares for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years, day, evening and overnight. We know a first day is a big day for the whole family. Seeing a new place ahead of time can help, so book a tour before the big day.
Questions parents ask
How can I help my toddler get ready for daycare?
Talk about it in simple words, read a book about starting school and practice short goodbyes with a family member. Keep the goodbye on the first day short and warm.
What if my child cries on the first day?
Tears are common with a new start. Give a hug, say when you’ll be back and leave calmly. Your calm helps them feel safe.
Being brave starts small. See Today’s tiny steps are tomorrow’s big adventures, and if the first day brings tears, remember that big feelings are welcome here.
